1.9. Condition

The Condition function allows you to direct respondents down different paths in the survey, depending on how they answer certain questions.

Conditions can be based on response alternatives or background values set as hidden question.

Example: Use the condition function to show one group of questions to the respondents who want to subscribe to your mailing list and a different group to respondent's who don't.

It is possible to create up to five and-conditions or seven or-conditions on a specific question.

Conditions are a supplement to jumps and are especially useful on single, matrix, and 3D matrix questions.

Pro tip: Before launching your survey, use the Test button to make sure your conditions work as they should.

With the condition function you can:

Add Conditions

1. In the element tree, under the Questionnaire tab, select the question element you wish to add a condition to.

2. Go to the Setup menu, at the bottom, and click the Condition button. A new window will open.

3. Click on the New group button to add your first condition. A new window will open.

4. In this window you define which question and response option the condition should refer to.

True/False: Choose if you want the condition to be TRUE or FALSE.
TRUE condition indicates that the response option has been chosen by the respondent. If you apply a true condition the question will be shown, if the respondent has chosen the specific response option.
FALSE condition indicates that the response option hasn't been chosen by the respondent. A false condition can only refer to one response option and the condition will be fulfilled when a respondent answers anything but the chosen response option.

Variables: Here you need to choose which question you want your condition to refer to. You can only create a condition based on questions listed before the dependent question.

Response option: Specify which response option the condition should refer to, e.g. that you want the condition to be shown to all respondents that have answered yes. You also need to choose between the following:

<= Less than or equal to
< Less than
=> Greater than or equal to
= Equal to

Note: If you use the "<" or ">", you should notice that the system will refer to the listing of the response options.

5. You can now add an and-condition, an or-condition, or a combination of both.

Add And-conditions

An and-condition is used in cases where you have several conditions you want to be fulfilled before the question is shown. With an and-condition all conditions need to be fulfilled before the question is shown.

Example: Question 3, should only be shown to male respondents in the 30-39 age bracket.

1. Select the question you are going to add conditions to, in this case question 3, click on Condition under the Setup menu at the bottom and click on New Group.

2. Create the first condition - True, Gender = Male.

3. Click OK to continue.

4. Click on New Group and create the second condition - True, Age = 30-39.

5. Click OK to continue.

6. You have now created an and-condition. Here you can see that the conditions are separated into different groups. The different groups specify that each group has to be fulfilled before the question is shown. If you want to add another condition click on New group.

Note: You can always view conditions in the element tree. If it states Display depends on other questions a condition has been added, click on the text to see the condition.

Add Or-conditions

Another option is to create an or-condition. An or-condition is used in cases where one of the conditions should be fulfilled before the question is shown.

Example: Question 3, should be shown to respondents in the 20-29 OR 30-39 age bracket.

1. Select the question you are going to add conditions to, in this case question 3, click on Condition under the Setup menu at the bottom and click on New Group.

2. Create the first condition - Age = 20-29

3. Now select Group 1, where the first condition is place, and click on New Condition.

4. Now you can define your or-condition, in this case Age = 30-39

5. Click OK to add and save the defined conditions.

Note: Unlike and-conditions, or-conditions are shown in the same group.

Note: You can always view conditions in the element tree. If it states Display depends on other questions a condition has been added, click on the text to see the condition.

Add Combined Condition

You can combine the two types of conditions. Follow the procedures above to create either and-condition or or-conditions.

Using the example above, you can see that question 3 is only shown to male respondents that are in the 20-29 or the 30-39 age bracket.
